Space Art

Brock has recently become quite the artist. Give a pen and some paper and he's set. The skills are really starting to come along too. What started as crazy scribbling and endless loops, has transformed into a true effort to make recognizable pictures. Brock has even mastered a few letters (though we'll save that for another post).

He also has become enamored with the solar system. Brock loves books about the planets and is always belting out random facts he's learned about the planets, as well as some extras he makes up about his favorite fake planet "wall-e." (Brock has never seen nor heard of the pixar movie of the same name. It's just a fake name to him that he made up and wall-e is a pretty crazy planet from the way he talks of it. When he gets a little older, i'll ask if i'm spelling it right.)

Brock classifies planets with a basic 3-question system:
-How big is the planet? (You can use your arms for this.)
-Can you build roads on it? (This is his way of asking if it's gassy or rocky)
-Is its day longer than its year? (Seriously Venus?)

Also, the planets are frequently our imaginary friends that play with us everywhere. Jupiter is by far the favorite. Anyways, here's some art. This is all drawn unassisted and unsuggested. Brock drew these pictures and I asked him for descriptions. I tried to number them in the order they were described to me with some rough quotes.

1) "The Sun."
2) "This is Mercury. It's really close to the sun so it gets really hot except for some parts that are really cold."
3) "This is Jupiter"
4) "This is Io. It goes around Jupiter."
5) "That's just a close-up of Jupiter cause Jupiter is really big."
6) "That's more Jupiter stuff."

1) "the Sun" (this was the first time i'm seen him draw sunshine lines)
2) "Mercury"
3) "Venus"
4) "Earth"
5) "Mars"
6) "That's Jupiter..."
7) "...and that's it big red spot." (Brock always draws such a huge spot)
8) "This is a close-up of Mars."
9) "That's the planet Bolstar. It's even closer to the Sun than Mercury so it gets even hotter. It's almost touching. Everything melts on Bolstar."
10) I can't remember what Brock named this planet. It started with a P and was short and cutesy. Something like "Piney" perhaps? I'll ask him again.
11) "That's an astronaut visiting Earth."

We also got Brock a stuffed Jupiter. Here's a video of right after he opened it. Warning: it may be on the long and boring side to non-grandparents, but it's the video we have.
