Skiing in the Midwest.
Matt and I love the mountains. I grew up skiing and Matt somehow acquired a large amount of snowboarding skill despite the perhaps limitations of a place I've heard of called "Nebraski" which speaks for itself. We wanted to get Brock to the mountain when he was four but life happens and I don't think he is over the hill at six. Over the hill? On the hill!!! YASSSS!!
Alice's vote was for a beach vacation.
On the shore of the frozen lake by the airbnb.
We decide to make the boy's first attempt at the slopes at the popular Devil's Head Resort in Wisconsin. We bring our ski buddies Nemik and Dasha with us and thier first time skier Max in tow with high hopes of Colorado next year. Not pictured below was Brock's first moments on skis (this is for the best) with me. I was panicking, legs do not bend that way. Brock was screaming. My dreams of annual winter retreats are melting like the man-made snow around me. But not to fear. Come lesson time with mom out of the picture he has a new attitude and takes to the sport with grace.
Brock at his very first down the hill experience. Here he is going up a rug to come down.
Meanwhile, Alice gets to run around the lodge.
Except she can't move.
Brock getting on the lift for the first time!
oh. wow. look. at. the. fresh. powder.
And our friends Dasha and Nemik with thier son on thier first lift ride...
Did he fall? is he just chillin'? not sure, but he is smiling and that is all we care about.
This place has babysitting!! So we get to do the run as a triade.
It is the last run for the day. Here is Brock french frying down the black diamond (we are not disillusioned, we understand that it is a hill we are looking at vs. a mountain) but still! People! The boy has legitimate bragging rights for slamming a black diamond and not falling. But also not turning. We'll work on it, next year, next year.
Oh yes, here is the happy hotdogger, master of the "mountain" hillkiller, ready for the next adventure. Which was sadly the COVID19 shutdown but there is always next year (fingers crossed!).
