Mamma Duck

Image
A couple of days ago, we got the most amazing surprise and true sign of spring. I went up to get some dirt to plant a lovely hyacinth whose decadent smell I could not refuse at Trader Joe's and heard a tremendous flutter and squawk. My wide eyes were met with a fabulous site of a batch of eggs! and there in a tizzy, a flustered duck! A mother mallard chose one of Matt's containers for a nest! Seems like a terrible idea, with the whole how do ducklings get down off of a 4 story roof, but I don't know what ghetto life is like for wild fowl, guessing mamma duck has a good idea of a place safe from predators. As you know, cohabitation with ducks is quite familiar for me, although I am out of practice. I went to the experts. Mom and dad said to give mamma duck a food option and stay out of her way and we should have some amazing little friends in month or so. So we have. Mamma duck is quite dedicated and no one else has been able to see the eggs but me on that first day when I

goodbye walrus

Image
Easter was a momentous day. Yes, there was the Easter Bunny and Jesus and I'm sure all kinds of other big deals that day, but for Brock, there was one main event, goodbye to Walrus. It was a long time coming. He's been down to one for a good 9 months now, we didn't think it would last as long as it did. Many kids give up after it gets a hole in it, but not Brock. That thing was getting quite vile, and always had remains of snacks past squelching in its plastic-y folds. So, it was time. I decided Easter just because I was hoping to do a ceremony that might be fun for Brock. Other composed narrative ends to sweet suckage would not work for him. The thought of "giving walrus to another baby" or a child in need simply would not have flown with Brock. We gave it to him straight, he wasn't a baby anymore, and pacifiers were essentially for babies and it was time to say goodbye. By putting walrus in an Easter egg and burying him at the park. So we went to Dean park

Brock counts to 100...flawlessly?

Image
Brock can count to 100! He had been stalled up in the past by the names for the units of 10, but he has been practicing counting by 10's so now he's got it down (this might explain why he was able to come up the 10 teeth on top + 10 teeth on bottom = 20 teeth in previous dentist post). Anyhow, I got some documentation that is not perfect persay, but you can tell he's got it. He loves counting I might add and rambles off while were driving fairly regularly.

Brock's First Sox Game

Image
So it's weird to start a blog post without a Brock picture, but bear with me. There's a story here. This past weekend was my fantasy baseball draft. Mackie, the fellow pictured above, flies down from Alaska every year to participate. This year he stayed through Monday so we could attend the White Sox opener. I've been trying to figure out the perfect time to bring Brock to a game. Unfortunately, mlb games are typically scheduled during nap time or after bed time. It's a conundrum. Opening day was out of the question. It's expensive, it's packed, and it's typically cold and wet. I never try to attend opening day, but Mackie was in town, so I demurred.  Well, the weather did not cooperate. We stood in the rain for about 3 hours before being sent home. The sox rescheduled for Tuesday, but Mackie had to fly home. Now we were sitting on an extra ticket to a 1pm game: nap time. Holly and I decided he should go, and offered him two choices: he cou

Brock's first visit to the the dentist

Image
Oh the dentist. Rarely has a figure imbued such apprehension and dread. To soften the image and experience, we first took Brock to watch Matt's visit. He enjoyed it and got to pick out some goodies himself. The dental hygienist, Cindy, was lovely and we love our dentist, Dr. Cooper who has a little guy a couple years older than Brock. I thought for sure he would be excited when his time came in April. Not so much it turned out when the bell tolled. I told Brock on Sunday that tomorrow we were going to the dentist after school. He was not enthused despite my reminders that he enjoyed watching daddy, it wouldn't hurt, and we'd be going for celebratory donuts after. Anyhow, I diffused it enough for the evening. The following morning, he seemed ok. When I picked him up at school and he was super excited to go. We got to the office, joy ensued. We went to the bathroom and saw Dr. Cooper who said hello to Brock and all courage deflated. He ran back into the waiting room and said

Brock School Pics

The last few months have been just swell for Brock at school. Here is a long picture filled post to see him in action.    This is Brock's favorite game that he plays outside, "bad guy ship". He and his pals are bad guys and shoot gum and ice cream out of their fingers. Doesn't sound that "bad" to me.  This is hunky Mr. Shaun. He has been filling in for Jambo for March. Brock really likes him and sounded a little disappointed that this was his last week with him.  Matt and I were able to come on visitors day, (not a regular occurrence). It was awesome, but Brock was really sad when our time was up. He has been waiting for the day that he could show us his works for a long time. We got to see a lot, and it was great to have him introduce to the other kids as well.
