Mamma Duck

A couple of days ago, we got the most amazing surprise and true sign of spring. I went up to get some dirt to plant a lovely hyacinth whose decadent smell I could not refuse at Trader Joe's and heard a tremendous flutter and squawk. My wide eyes were met with a fabulous site of a batch of eggs! and there in a tizzy, a flustered duck! A mother mallard chose one of Matt's containers for a nest! Seems like a terrible idea, with the whole how do ducklings get down off of a 4 story roof, but I don't know what ghetto life is like for wild fowl, guessing mamma duck has a good idea of a place safe from predators. As you know, cohabitation with ducks is quite familiar for me, although I am out of practice. I went to the experts. Mom and dad said to give mamma duck a food option and stay out of her way and we should have some amazing little friends in month or so. So we have. Mamma duck is quite dedicated and no one else has been able to see the eggs but me on that first day when I scared her away from the nest on accident; she is always on them. It is pouring rain today and cold, and I can't seem to remember that she is wild and that I don't need to go put an umbrella over her. Anyhow, we are not sure what to do once the eggs hatch. We know that acting now would be the demise of the batch. Matt wants to set up the kiddie pool and let the ducks move in till they can fly. Sounds adorable, but perhaps calling the warden is best. Either way, we are super excited for Brock to see mother nature so up close and personal in an urban environment and we can't wait to meet our fluffy little brood!
