Brock's first visit to the the dentist

Oh the dentist. Rarely has a figure imbued such apprehension and dread. To soften the image and experience, we first took Brock to watch Matt's visit. He enjoyed it and got to pick out some goodies himself. The dental hygienist, Cindy, was lovely and we love our dentist, Dr. Cooper who has a little guy a couple years older than Brock. I thought for sure he would be excited when his time came in April. Not so much it turned out when the bell tolled. I told Brock on Sunday that tomorrow we were going to the dentist after school. He was not enthused despite my reminders that he enjoyed watching daddy, it wouldn't hurt, and we'd be going for celebratory donuts after. Anyhow, I diffused it enough for the evening. The following morning, he seemed ok. When I picked him up at school and he was super excited to go. We got to the office, joy ensued. We went to the bathroom and saw Dr. Cooper who said hello to Brock and all courage deflated. He ran back into the waiting room and said "I'm not going in there, I'm not saying hi". Oh boy. Then, Cindy came in to get us. Face in the chair, quiet scared tears between statements of "I'm not going". Then, after a minute or so (more like a year in mamma my-toddler-is-not-perfect time), you could visibly see him wrangle up his courage and take his face out of the seat and step though the door. Cindy first got him up in the awesome chair and took him for a little ride up and down. This really helped settle his nerves. He was really trying to stay positive as he kept reassuring himself, "yeah, there are lot's of flavors". The Cindy took a picture of his teeth and put them up on the TV for us to look at. It was super cool. Then she took out a tiny camera on a stick that went inside his mouth and filmed his teeth live.

He was into it now. At this point it was smooth sailing. The cool glasses were a win as well. After that, he seem visibly relaxed and opened his mouth for as long and wide as they wanted.

First we counted his teeth. 10 on top and 10 on the bottom, I asked him how many teeth all together and he actually answered 20 immediately. Cindy was pretty impressed, as was I. I think it was a fluke, but whatever, the boy does often shine in these situations.

He then got to pick his toothpaste flavor. He went with cherry although he originally wanted cinnamon (Matt chose cinnamon on his visit, and Brock does love that spice), but I think Cindy was gently urging him away from it because of the tingle. He remarked on liking the cherry a lot so bravo.

Like a pro! We went for the fluoride treatment because he was doing so well. This required simply leaving your mouth open with the fluoride on it for 60 seconds. Brock loves counting and listening to us count so this was not a difficult task. Then Dr. Cooper came for a quick look see and Brock was super proud to show him his clean teeth. He had one moment of panic when Dr. Cooper was done and asked, "do I have any cavities?!!" Dr. Cooper smiled and said no his teeth looked great and to keep brushing like he was. Whoo hooo!!!

We of course celebrated with a donut. Don't tell Cindy and Dr. Cooper.
